I Am and I Am #2

I Am
(The Metaphor Poem)

I am…

a fox hiding in the underbrush
a ship in a hurricane
an ox pulling the weight of the harvest
a tree standing in the pouring rain
a rock enduring the landslide
a weather vane

…on the outside

I am…

a bird in a cage
a dog with a collar
a tiger mounting with rage
a mute who wants to holler
a torn page
a midget growing taller

...on the inside

Directions:

Create six metaphors about different aspects of yourself. Don’t be plain by simply writing “I am a three-toed sloth.” You must provide an action for each of your metaphors. A sentence like “I am a three-toed sloth” becomes “I am a three-toed sloth laying limp on branch.” After each metaphor write the aspect of yourself that you are trying to represent.

I Am
(The Second Poem )

Directions: Rewrite and fill in the missing parts of the poem with your personal information. Avoid the obvious and ordinary such as “I am a seventeen year-old boy with brown hair.” Think of things about yourself that are distinctive and different.

1st Stanza

I am (two special characteristics you have)
I wonder (something you are actually curious about)
I hear (an imaginary sound)
I am (repeat the first line)

2nd Stanza

I pretend (something you actually pretend to do)
I feel (a feeling about something imaginary)
I touch (an imaginary touch)
I worry (something that really bothers you)
I cry (something that makes you very sad).
I am (repeat the first line)

3rd Stanza

I understand (something you know to be true)
I say (something you believe in)
I dream (something you actually dream about)
I try (something you actually make an effort about)
I hope (something you actually hope for)
I am (repeat the first line)

Tips:

Follow the model
Use creative detail
Give the reader a sense of you

First Stanza
I am
I wonder
I hear
I am

Second Stanza
I pretend
I feel
I touch
I worry
I cry
I am

Third Stanza
I understand
I say
I dream
I try
I hope
I am
